A tabletop sterilizer, also known as an autoclave, is a device that sterilizes patient care items for future use. Patient care items are divided into four categories, including items that penetrate soft tissue, come in contact with bone, enter the vascular system, or come in contact with other sterile tissue.
Steam sterilization uses heat from high-pressure saturated steam to denature DNA and destroy enzymes to kill microorganisms on the surface of the device. The encapsulated device is placed in a chamber (autoclave) and pressurized steam is introduced at 121°C for some time.
